Geoff Dunlop (published 1985)

Description

Geoff Dunlap discusses his career as videographer for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, filming them for British Television. Mr. Dunlop describes Merce Cunningham as a singular genius who is consistent and ordered with an inquiring mind, always asking questions. He further describes Mr. Cunningham's work as a complex dialogue constantly interrogating what is an artist. Mr. Dunlop filmed for two nights in a theater with two cameras. He would have preferred two nights of rehearsal and four nights to shoot. Filming dance is one compromise after another and directors in dance are very restricted. This film was not trying to mediate between the dance choreographer and the audience.

Biographical note:
Geoff Dunlop is a filmmaker with wide international experience. He formed Kailash Multimedia. He works in film, video and photography. He works in TV and film and has worked with business. Some of his films are Out of the Shadows, a film shot in Lebanon about John McCarthy, who was a hostage of Shia gunman for five years. Growing Pains and The Gardeners of Eden were two films for BBC2 about a unique environmental organization. Are You Captain Corelli? is about a survivor of a massacre on the Greek island of Cephalonia.
