Description
In this interview, Ashley describes the expectations that were placed on her as a dancer, like speed and clarity. She describes how these expectations intersected and overlapped with her expectations for herself.
Biographical note:
Merrill Ashley was born Linda Michelle Merrill in Rutland, Vermont on December 2, 1950. She began dancing at the age of seven. When she was 13, she received a Ford Foundation scholarship and began to study full time at the School of American Ballet, the official school of the New York City Ballet. She changed her name shortly thereafter because the company already had a dancer named Linda Merrill.
